Outreach
Summertime Outreach
Thanks so much to everyone leafleting
late-running colleges and high schools!
Vegan Outreach's 2008 distribution
has now passed 930,000! (It wasn't
untl late-July that we reached that
number in 2007.) Overall, we've
distributed 8 million booklets
since our founding!
Vegan Outreach would like to continue
our outreach during the summer.
We have put together this
list of what we hope
are outreach-friendly concerts.
If you are available to leaflet
one (or more), please contact Anne
(anne

"What they were looking for,
Carroll says, was an informant --
someone to show up at 'vegan potlucks'
throughout the Twin Cities ....
The effort’s primary mission, according
to the Minneapolis division’s website,
is to 'investigate terrorist acts
carried out by groups or organizations
which fall within the definition
of terrorist groups as set forth
in the current United States Attorney
General Guidelines.'" Full

Veg in Britain
Via Farmed
Animal Watch, a new survey reveals
that one in ten Brits are either
vegetarian or vegan, with nearly
the same number having tried but
failed to switch to a meat-free
diet. The vast majority became vegetarian
on account of the way animals are
kept, treated and killed for food,
or because they are morally opposed
to killing animals. Full

Notes from Our
Members
While leafleting today's
festival,
one of the traffic
control officers accepted an Even
If. He went back in the street
and started reading the booklet.
No cars passed for a little while,
and he became completely engrossed.
Eventually, a couple cars came,
but he was so distracted that he
didn't even see them -- they had
to swerve around him. He looked
over at me with a dazed look on
his face. I just offered him a Guide,
which he was eager to take. His
friend got curious and asked for
one, too.

At Kingsborough Community
College, one student
doing a photo project stopped to
take several pictures of me leafleting.
Also, a rep from student government
asked if someone from VO could come
give a speech sometime. I heard
many positive comments throughout
the day, including:
- "I support vegans!"
from a student who grabbed a leaflet
while skateboarding past.
- "Stop animal cruelty? Oh,
yes!"
- "I've been thinking of
going vegan!"
Also had two longer conversations
with students who stopped with questions
and were super interested in going
veg.

At the University of
Delaware, one young
woman said, "I'm down to eating
meat only one day a week and it's
because of stuff like this,"
as she pointed to the booklet. One
young man said he had received a
booklet last week. He now has misgivings
working at a deli that sells meat,
and is thinking much more about
his food choices. I thanked him
for considering the information
in the booklet and he replied with
a heavy, sincere, "Believe
me, I have been." Inside the
student union, I saw a man deeply
engrossed in an open Even If
inside across his open textbook
-- the suffering of farmed animals
took precedence over studying for
finals..
I noticed a big banner in the student
union about how we can reduce our
carbon footprint, something I'm
seeing more and more of these days.
It is a sign of progress and I'm
looking forward to the day when
measuring our "suffering footprint"
takes hold.
